Personal Review {22 Feb. 1999}:
The Smokehouse Steak & Barbeque Restaurant is a new place, opened within the
past month or so in what used to be a corner Pizza place. The menu looks
good and the aroma of barbeque as you walk up to the restaurant is very
enticing. The special that brought us in was a whole rack of ribs for only
$10. This included the 'endless' salad (all you can eat) along with a side.
A really good deal. The menu also sports a selection of hardwood cooked
burgers, BBQ sandwiches, BBQ chicen, shrimp, pit beef and ham, ribs and
steaks and some interesting BBQ appetizers and soups/chili. The restaurant
is non-smoking and the service was great. The restaurant is clearly becoming
popular already as there was a good ground gathering. However, for our taste,
the BBQ sauce used on the ribs was much too sweet. Everything was very sticky
after eating because of the high sugar levels. The ribs were cooked well
though, not over-cooked and falling apart as is typical in most Maryland rib
places we've been (with the exception of the ribs at Pizzaria Uno in Bel Air...
those were great). Smokehouse Restaurant also use a bit too much onion in
everything including the sautéed spinach and baked beans...much too much
for
one of our party. Other items on the menu may be ok, but if they're all using
the BBQ sauce that was on the ribs, I doubt we would go back for another trip.
Getting out of the restuarant on the busy corner of Philadelphia Road and
Golden Ring was a real challenge at rush hour.
Bottom Line: OK, but not great. Inexpensive
