Personal Review (29-August-2003):
The restaurant has moved out of the Blackstone Apartments and
across the street into the Matin building on campus at Johns
Hopkins University. Not much has changed with respect to
quality, however, from what I've been told. The name is now
listed as the Silk Road Express. A recent Hopkins flyer notes
the restaurant fare includes "muffins, bgels, croissants,
desserts, sandwiches, salads, soups, coffees, beverages." The
restaurant is open from 2pm to midnight.
Personal Review :
The Silk Road Cafe just opened up around the 8th of May (1996). It
is located in the site previously occupied by Cafe Diana, the mostly
vegetarian feminist restaurant.
The Silk Road Cafe is more of a Deli-type atmosphere with a counter and a few small tables for patrons (table service was provided). There is a separate room across the hall for the smokers in the crowd. The menu is a hodgepodge of various sandwiches, vegetarian as well as a few meats, oriental dishes, mid-east selections and burgers. A group of us visited the Cafe during the first week of operation. While the oriental dishes were good and reasonably filling, the sandwiches were a bit on the skimpy side and the bread, I'm told, was stale (a real turnoff). In general, the prices were very reasonable for the cooked dishes, a bit expensive for the sandwiches given the previous comments. I wouldn't want to turn you away from Silk Road because they do have some good selections, but there is definitely room for improvement. {13 May 1996}
