Personal Review {24 August 2002} :
A large group of us (14) went to Rocky Run for lunch yesterday. I've heard
about this restaurant before, and it seems to be one of the favorites of some
Hopkins staff. After eating there, I would agree that this restaurant is
worth eating at again, although there were a couple problems.
The menu is great. It was very difficult to decide what to order because of the wide variety of items including salads and soups, lots of yummy looking appetizers, a large selection of burgers, seafood, mexican style dishes, cajun style dishes, pastas, sandwiches...you name it, you can find just about anything you want, from mild to very spicey. Of course, they also have a large selection of beers. What's neat about the restaurant for kids, and the child in all of us, is that the tables are covered with paper and each table has a cup full of crayons for you to create whatever you like. A good way to pass the time waiting for your food, which can be a little slow (of course, there were 14 of us).
The entree I had on this visit was the Bayou Bird Wrap, spicy cajun chicken breast strips covered with melted jalapeno pepper jack cheese and wrapped in a southwest flavored tortilla. It was great. Other members of our party had salads, burgers, shrimp pasta, and more. I heard no complaints about the quality of the food. We did have a mixup when one of the helpers delivered a turkey burger w/ fries to my wife who had ordered it with baked beans. So, rather than check to see if another member of our party had ordered that combination, he took it back to the kitchen. Consquently, the other order got waylaid and was very slow in coming. Things got a bit confused. The desert most of us ordered was good too...all ordered the mini-mousse. Some looked as if they had been sitting out awhile warming up and melting, but they still tasted good. Prices for lunch were very reasonable.
The only really negative mark was that Rocky Run allows smoking in the bar in the front. That smoke tends to drift occasionally into the so-called non-smoking area and gets pretty bad at times. This is the single biggest reason some of our party don't go to Rocky Run more frequently, though they would like to. A better barrier or ventilation would help enormously.
One other point, selections of some very wicked hot sauces can be found on each table. Most of these have been opened, of course. Some say they should be refrigerated after opening. I think I would be prone to select only those that do not require refrigeration to be safe, assuming anything could live or spread in those death defying sauces.
