Eat-in, Take-out, Catering
Personal Review {30 January 2002}:
Who would have thought...?! Parsa Kabob is a little
Persian style restaurant almost hidden away in the
back corner of the Yorktowne Plaza off Cranbrook Road
and is not even listed on the Plaza sign. The restaurant
is small and seems like a small deli-style eat-in or
carry-out place most would not go to unless they were
shopping in the Plaza. However, this quiet, unassuming
little eatery where you pick up your own tray of food when
summoned, was amazingly good and very reasonably priced.
The owner was very personable and explained how the pita
bread and the yogurt-cucumber sauce was made, as well as the
Sumac seasoning used for the rice and kabobs. We even
heard how he orders his dates for pastries from the area
of Southern California where I grew up.
We ordered the Lamb Kabob dinner and the Chicken Cajun
Kabob dinner. Fabulous. There was a lot of very light
fluffy white and basmati rice along with the kabobs and
grilled tomatoes. We both had servings of the homemade
pita bread with very tasty feta cheese. We finished off
the meal by splitting the pistachio baklava and mamoul (a
pastry with ground dates in the middle). Sinful to say the
least. The only down side was a rude patron who came in and
started up a cigarette in the small but open surroundings and
used her coke can for an ashtray, since no ashtrays were
provided (it IS illegal to smoke in restaurants in MD). We had
to beat a hasty retreat and leave to avoid getting sick.
The atmosphere was pleasant otherwise with several tables
and a very clean dining area complete with a couple fountains to
ease the chaos of the outside world. Prices, as noted, were
very reasonable. The kabob dinners range from $5.50 to $17.50,
where the higher prices are for large combinations that would
feed several people. Kabob sandwiches are available for about
$4.50. Desserts and appetizers ranged from $1.50 to $3.50. One
can also buy some of the spices used in the meal right there on
site should you want to try your hand at preparing your own
meal at home.
Parsa Kabob is a gem of a find in a totally unexpected place.
Well worth a stop for lunch or dinner.
