Personal Review (7/13/99):
The Mt. Washington Tavern is an old standard in the heart of Mt. Washington Village. We've been there a number of times over the years, usually in small to large groups from the Space Telescope Science Institute for 'going-away'- type luncheons. Invariably, while the food has been reasonably good, the service was marginally to abominably slow. On this visit, the service was pleasantly improved, though still a bit longer than would have been preferable if alone, but we were in a group of 16. The reports of the food quality varied. Some thought the grilled salmon BLT was very good, others, 'eh!' The California Club sanwiches looked good and were reported as such. The Grilled Chicken Burrito was said to leave a lot to be desired. The Bone Daddy sandwich consisting of Monterey Jack cheese, piles of turkey breast with cole slaw and 1000 Island dressing grilled on pumpernickel bread was very good. The chips, on the other hand, were slightly stale/soggy. Overall, the moderate pricing of $7-10 for sandwiches was high considering the general reports received from the group. The menu is interestingly varied with lots of choices. The surroundings were very pleasant, however, perhaps the reason for the higher prices. We were located in the back in the Garden Room complete with a live tree growing through the roof, many plants, several working ceiling fans and a very cold setting for the air conditioner (as point several people talked about). When one of our group commented that the cold temperature made her "eager to go back to work", another responded with "It's warmer there." All-in-all, it was a pleasnt noon-time (2 hour) lunch. No complaints, but not a lot of rave reviews either. I didn't smell any smoke in the Garden Room, so I'm assuming this was a non-smoking area [5/27/00: I understand the Garden Room is now a smoking section...what a shame since non-smokers who can't be in a smoking section will no longer be able to experience this nice setting]. Handicapped access, however, was virtually non-existent (unless there was a back entrance more easily accessible that the front)...many steps and different levels to negotiate.
