Personal Review {10 September 2002} :
Hoss's Family Steak & Sea House is a great Pennsylvania based chain restaurant where one can get a very good 'all you can eat' style meal at reasonable prices. Generally speaking, standards are good and consistent throughout the chain, but there are some exceptions (York - East, for example, is below our standard for good food, atmosphere and cleanliness). One orders from a standard menu of steaks, seafood, chicken and occasionally some other variations. All the entrées include the soup and salad bar (or you can get the soup and salad bar alone). We've eaten at Hoss's frequently and have rarely had a bad meal. The soup and salad bar is, of course, their signature item. One can get all kinds of salads and/or fixings, soups (the chowder on Friday's is great), appetizers including nachos, ranch beans, etc. and home made breads. Once you're finished with your salad (usually piled high), you can go back for more, or wait for your entrées. [Note that Hoss's also provides low-fat and non-fat dressings for the health/diet conscious.] After that, hit the salad bar again for desert. Hoss's makes many types of cakes, brownies, pies, cobblers, cookies (great place for the kids) as well as providing a very good selection of fruits. [Note here also, Hoss's provides some low-fat or fat-free desserts.] We always like topping off our meal with the frozen yogurt and two or more other items from the dessert table.

Entrées include various sizes of steaks cooked to your liking, shrimp, crabcakes, fish (usually fried, broiled or scampi style)and chicken, plus a large selection of hot side dishes. The typical meal for two adults runs about $20-25, not bad for all-you-can-eat and usually having to crawl out, if you can. The service is usually good and quick, despite the crowds (though you can miss the crowds by hitting the restaurant at slightly off the dinner rush hour). There are many locations to chose from (see the link to Hoss's web page above) in PA, a couple in WV, and one in VA. Without a doubt, Hoss's has to be one of the best deals in town for good food, service, reasonable prices and quantity (if you desire).
