Galactic O star catalog v 2.0
Jesús Maíz Apellániz, Alfredo Sota, Nolan R. Walborn, and Raquel Y. Shida
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This Galactic O star catalog is the second version of an ambitious project to
include as much information related to this type of objects as possible. This
version includes cross-references to other catalogs (with electronic links),
spectral classifications, astrometric information, optical-NIR photometry,
multiplicity information, and cluster/association membership.
The GOS catalog places a special emphasis on the uniformity of the spectral
classification used. In order to satisfy that requirement, the catalog was
built starting with the 350 Galactic O stars catalogued by one of us (N.R.W.)
over the years. Second, we added all further O stars with V<8 (a total of 18)
in the following standard spectral classification references: Morgan et al.
(1955), Lesh (1968), and Garrison (1977). Third, we searched the literature
and existing databases for other O stars with V<8 and we added those whose
classification did not conflict with the sources previously used (e.g. because
they were classified there as early B stars) and which also had V<8 (a total of
10). The final list of 378 O stars was subdivided into two groups: the main
catalog contains the 370 which do not have unresolved WR companions while the
first supplement adds the 8 that are members of such WR+O systems. Therefore, the
catalog should be complete for V<8 (but includes many stars fainter than that
limit). Starting with version 2.0, three additional supplements exist: two with
O star candidates (without and with unresolved WR companions) and one with
early-type stars excluded from the catalog. For future versions of the GOS catalog,
we plan to revise the spectral classifications for the stars in supplements 2 and 3
in order to move them to the main catalog or the other two supplements, add new
stars, obtain new spectra for all the stars in order to build a digital atlas,
revise the astrometry, include data queries, and integrate the catalog in the
Virtual Observatory.
If you use the GOS catalog, please refer to it for the time being as:

VERSION HISTORY
v 0.0: November 2002. First version with 379 stars.
v 0.1: December 2002. Typos in the spectral types for HD 152386, HD 156212, and
HD 216532 were corrected. Also, a double entry for HD 93632 was
eliminated (it also appeared as "HD 9332"), reducing the total number to
378 stars.
v 0.2: February 2003. A misidentification for HD 95589 (it appeared as HD 95549)
was found and corrected.
v 0.3: July 2003. A double entry for HD 97950 was eliminated and HD 93249 was
introduced after having been left out by a software error. Proofreading
revealed errors in the spectral types of CPD -28 2561 and HD 37022 and
in the qualifiers of Herschel 36, HD 39680, HD 46223, HD 37041,
HD 91651, HD 94024, CPD -59 2635, and HD 152219.
v 1.0: October 2003. First major additions to the catalog after v 0.0. Inclusion
of Hipparcos parallaxes and distances, ground-based optical and 2MASS
NIR photometry, multiplicity, and group membership information. Also,
nomenclature was changed to adjust it to IAU criteria. Erroneous
coordinates for three stars in Cyg OB2 (4, 5, and 11) were corrected.
Spectral types for WR companions in the supplement were added.
v 1.1: February 2005. The corrected 2MASS magnitudes (with the zero-point offsets
of Cohen et al. 2003) were replaced by the original 2MASS magnitudes
(no offset applied) in order to make the GOS catalog compatible with
CHORIZOS (Maíz-Apellániz 2004). An error in the U-B color of HD 11852
was corrected. The spectral type of HD 228766 was updated. The
nomenclature of a few stars was changed.
v 2.0: December 2006: Overhaul of the catalog: [a] creation of supplements 2, 3,
and 4; [b] compilation of alternate spectral classes; [c] addition of
Cousins RI photometry; [d] revision of photometry flags; and [e] creation
of index cards for each star. Tycho-2 photometry for HD 218195 was corrected.
Coordinates for Cyg OB2-22 A and Cyg OB2-22 B were corrected. HD 93129 A
changed to HD 93129 AaAb.
FUTURE PLANS
-Revise spectral classifications to move objects from the second and third
supplements to the main catalog and the other two supplements. Please, contact
jmaiz@iaa.es if you are interested in submitting spectrograms for consideration.
-Observe all the stars in order to publish a complete spectroscopic atlas.
-Revise the astrometric calibration.
-Introduce queries to search the catalog and supplements by e.g. position or
magnitude.
-Integrate the catalog into the Virtual Observatory.
