I stared at the Zope code and identified the pieces that take part in the bug. They are::

zope/interface/adapter.py (lookup code)

zope/traversing/configure.zcml (adapter configuration)

zope/traversing/namespace.py (traversal adapter code)

The trick will be get the lookup to return None.

I spent the day trying to find the cause of the etc bug, which looks more mysterious the more I look for it. As best I can tell, it's trying to traverse a string.

John asked me to write a script to report on people added or removed from ldap each month. It's mostly coded. I also tried to resolve a problem with the etc directory on production, so far unsuccessfully.
